Swim Lessons – Youth
The Harrisburg Area YMCA offers youth swim lessons for children ages 6-12 years. For our older swimmers, we focus on endurance, pool and personal safety, skill development, and lifesaving techniques. Swimming for ages 6-12 lowers the risk of drowning, builds whole-body strength, and can even help their school grades! Swimming is something your child can do at any age; swim lessons at the Y can start them off right, whether in a team or individual environment.
Level 1: Water Acclimation
Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance.
Level 2: Water Movement
Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently.
Level 3: Water Stamina
Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages.
Level 4: Stroke Introduction
Develop stroke technique in front crawl and learn breaststroke and butterfly kick.
Level 5: Stroke Development
Introduces breaststroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke.
Level 6: Stroke Mechanics
Refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

WSY Homeschool Swim
Beginner/Intermediate Combo level class: Participant is not comfortable going underwater voluntarily, can not front/back float and can not swim a distance greater than 10 yards independently. Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency. Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance with the objective that they will be able to perform independently to advance to next level.
Intermediate/Advanced Combo level class: Participant MUST be comfortable swimming underwater, independently floating on front/back and CAN swim a distance of 10-15 yards independently. Having mastered the fundamentals in beginner classes, students will learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills to build confidence and stay active through swimming.
Group lesson schedule is subject to change.
- Program fees are non-refundable unless the program is canceled.
- No transfers, cancellations, or credits will be given after 02/22/2026.
