Collaborating with the Northern York County School District, the West Shore YMCA provides enrolled students the opportunity to play in their Recreational Youth Basketball League. For students in grades 3-6 at Northern York School District. Children must be enrolled in the Northern York School District to participate.

The Recreational Basketball League will be participating in a local mini-league with Gettysburg League. Everyone who registers will be placed on a team through assessments. Team t-shirts will be provided!

Dates: December 6, 2025 – February, 2026

Schedule: Practices TBD (Weekday evening and Saturday).  Sunday games at Gettysburg.

Ages: Grades 3-6

Our goal for YBL is to offer the community’s children an enjoyable chance to learn and value basketball through active engagement in practices and games. This aims to enhance athletic skills and knowledge of the game, foster confidence and self-esteem, and promote a deeper comprehension of teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect for others.

The Friendship YMCA Developmental Basketball program emphasizes skill development, gameplay concepts, teamwork, and FUN! This program is designed to introduce young athletes to the fundamentals of the game in a positive, encouraging environment. This group focuses on building confidence, coordination, and excitement for basketball through age-appropriate instruction and play.

Participants will learn:

• basic dribbling, passing, and shooting
• footwork, balance, and movement skills
• how to listen, follow directions, and participate in group activities
• teamwork, ball sharing, and encouraging others
• small-sided, modified games to building understanding without added pressure

This program is instruction-based and does not participate in 5v5 league play.

Our goal is to help children feel successful, stay active, and develop a lifelong love for the game.

All skill levels are welcome.

5v5 Basketball Intro League

The Friendship YMCA’s Youth Basketball League introduces players to structured team basketball in a supportive and competitive environment. Athletes will develop their skills through weekly practices in the style of 5v5 games while learning the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and good sportsmanship.

Focuses include:

• dribbling, shooting, passing, and defense
• offensive and defensive spacing
• games rules and court awareness
• team communication and decision-making
• equal playing time and a positive game atmosphere

This league balances competition with learning, making it ideal for players who are still building confidence, as well as those ready for the next level.

• January 5 – February 23, 2026
• March 2 – April 20, 2026

5v5 Intermediate Basketball  League

The Friendship YMCA’s Intermediate Basketball League is designed for athletes ready for a faster-paced, competitive experience. Players deepen their skills through full-court games that emphasize strategy, athletic development, and teamwork.

Focuses include:

• offensive concepts such as cutting, pick-and-roll, spacing, and transition play
• individual and team defense
• condition, footwork, and game IQ
• leadership, communication, and character development

This league prepares athletes for school teams and higher-level competition while maintaining the YMCA values of respect, fairness, and sportsmanship.

• March 2 – April 26, 2026

Schedule:

• Spring Session: Mondays from 7:00-8:00pm

Play with the folks who invented the sport on Saturday mornings at the Y! This 8-week program will focus on the fundamentals of basketball, sportsmanship, teamwork and healthy habits. Children will learn rules and practice basketball fundamentals like dribbling, shooting, passing, and in most cases going the right way down the court through fun drills and games. We will end the session with games for each grade level on week eight. 30 participant maximum.
